God Appearing to us would destroy our freedom?!

Standard

Daniel Peterson says in his recent Interpreter article that “… if God were to reveal himself directly and conclusively, he would destroy our freedom, so overwhelming would that revelation be.” If we follow the logic of this assumed assertion to its end we have a gigantic problem. What of Joseph Smith’s First Vision? What of prophets whom God is assumed to talk to face to face, such as Moses and Isaiah and Ezekiel and Enoch and even Abraham and Adam?! Did Paul’s magnificent “enlightening” vision steal and destroy his freedom? Did Stephen’s in Acts? Did John’s utterly incredible vision of God in the Revelation steal and destroy his freedom or anyone else’s who reads it? Did it steal or destroy any of the Apostles who was with Jesus during those magnificent revelations he had or else gave them? Did the resurrected Jesus who lingered for 40 days after the resurrection, and hence as God, steal and destroy the freedom of all those he mingled with for that time? What of today’s supposed living prophets who, as a nature of their calling is to testify of knowing and seeing God as we are all taught in Mormonism on our mama’s knee?
